von Asseburg & von Wolfenbüttel Ancestry


The von Wolfenbüttel connection begins with my 20th Great Grandmother, Ermgardis von der Asseburg (1291 - 1356), who married Herbold I von Papenheim auf Liebenau (1275 - 1348). Ermgardis, who I have also found as 'Ermengard', descended from the von Wolfenbüttel line (see below). Thus, the coats of arms above represent both families. I will say that the second coat of arms above, of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel is actually the coat of arms that appears on the modern Schloss Wolfenbüttel. It is pretty fabulous as coats of arms go but I cannot say that it was the coat of arms of the earlier von Wolfenbüttel family. It appears the castle had several reconstructions but the original castle that Wikekind von Wolfenbüttel built can be seen here.
